Human rights activists and politicians in Kashmir have accused the Narendra Modi Government of being "vengeful" as Covid-19 is surging in prisons in Kashmir, with many imprisoned without charge or trial testing positive, despite in other states prisoners released en mass to reduce the spread in overcrowded jails.

India recorded 34,956 fresh coronavirus cases and 687 deaths on Friday, taking the total to 10,03,832. This is the highest daily rise in the number of infections as well as deaths.

Jailed poet-activist Varavara Rao has tested positive for Covid-19, said a hospital official on Thursday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India crossed 8.50 lakh with 28,701 new infections reported on Monday.

More people are going hungry, an annual study by the United Nations has found. Tens of millions have joined the ranks of the chronically undernourished over the past five years, and countries around the world continue to struggle with multiple forms of malnutrition.

India on Sunday recorded 28,638 new coronavirus cases, taking the total to 8,49,553. This is the biggest single-day jump in infections so far.
