At Delhi border cops use tear gas, water cannons to disperse farmers

The Delhi Police on Friday used tear gas shells to disperse thousands of farmer protesters after they reached the Singhu border as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to protest against the Centre’s recent farm laws.

The shells were fired at the border point which connects Delhi with Haryana.

At Singhu border, hundreds of personnel from the Rapid Action Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Delhi Police were deputed, along with a poster that read: “Due to Covid-19, on the instructions of DDMA (Delhi Disaster Management Authority), any kind of rally and dharna is not allowed in this area. Action would be taken against violators”.

Farmers’ protest is against the Centre’s new farm laws which they say would pave the way for dismantling of the MSP system.

Punjab farmers, representing over 30 farm bodies, have announced they will go to Delhi through several routes — Lalru, Shambhu, Patiala-Pehowa, Patran-Khanauri, Moonak-Tohana, Ratia-Fatehabad and Talwandi-Sirsa.

Protests erupted in Rohtak Friday morning after a 45-year-old farmer, part of Dilli Chalo march, died in a road accident.
