Farmers defy 144 to gather for mahapanchayat in Shamli in UP

Despite prohibitory orders in place under section 144 of the CrPC, thousands of farmers turned up for a khap mahapanchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district Friday to protest against the Narendra Modi government’s three new farm laws.

Along with regional farmer leaders, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) vice president Jayant Chaudhary attended the event.

This is the fourth major farmers’ meeting in western Uttar Pradesh after Muzaffarnagar, Mathura and Baghpat to support the ongoing agitation against the farm laws.

Chaudhary had on Thursday tweeted that there are “144 reasons why I will go to Shamli tomorrow”, attaching to it a news article on the denial of permission for the event by the Shamli district authority.

According to PTI news agency, thousands of farmers from Shamli and nearby districts marched to Shamli’s Bhainswal village on tractors, two- and four-wheelers and on foot for a the kisan panchayat being held there by RLD.
