2024 elections: Chidambaram says Opp can field common candidates against BJP on 450 seats

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram called for the Opposition parties to come together and pitch common candidates on 450 Lok Sabha seats, instead of different parties pitching their own candidates, to defeat the BJP in the 2024 General Elections.

“Each state election is different… There is no such thing as the Karnataka model. But where Congress is fighting the election all alone, with some support in some cases, I think the Karnataka model of selecting candidates can be adopted in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh,” former Union Finance Minister said in a press conference in Mumbai.

“In my view, if all non- BJP opposition parties get together, it is possible to field common candidates against the BJP on at least 450 Lok Sabha seats. But that is a desire, an aspiration. Several political parties are meeting in Patna on June 12 in this regard,” he added.

Bihar chief minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar will chair a meeting of “all prominent Opposition parties” from different parts of India on June 12 in Patna to carry forward the efforts to build a broad-based unity against the saffron party in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
