BJP manifesto promises Uniform Civil Code, NRC in Karnataka

In the election manifesto released on Monday, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party promised the controversial Uniform Civil Code and National Register for Citizens in Karnataka if they return to power.

These policies are considered discriminatory towards the Muslim community. The Hindu nationalist party also bid scheme regulating local businesses around temples, which echoes the calls for a ban on Muslim shops near them.

BJP assures a committee “to grant complete autonomy of temple administration to devotees”.

“Our manifesto is a vision document for a developed Karnataka. It encompasses a forward looking approach and promises to fulfil the aspirations of everyone in Karnataka,” BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda wrote on Twitter.

The BJP also promises three LPG cylinders free per year to BPL families, to be distributed in the months of Hindu festivals Yugadi, Ganesh Chaturthi and Deepavali.

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) calls for the formulation of one law for India, which would be applicable to all religious communities in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

For Bengaluru, the BJP promises a ‘State Capital Region’ for “comprehensive city development strategy, cohesive transportation networks and cutting-edge digital integration”.

Another offer is a universal ‘My City My Card’ to facilitate travel across all modes of public transport in the metro.

Smart Water to optimise water usage, and CCTVs equipped with AI facial recognition software are among other promises.

In an attempt to quell the controversy over Amul entering the Karnataka market, BJP promised to include the provision of half a litre of Nandini milk every day to BPL families under Poshan Yojana.
