Gujarat: College principal issues notice asking students to join BJP, resigns after backlash

The principal of a college in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar had asked students to enroll themselves in the Bharatiya Janata Party.

As the notices signed by Rajnibala Gohil, the in-charge principal of Shreemati Narmadabai Chatrabhuj Gandhi Mahila College, went viral on social media on Monday and local media outlets started reporting it, the college administration said she had resigned.

In the notice, Gohil asked the students to bring their passport size photos and mobile phones to the college so that they could be enrolled as members of the Hindu nationalist party.

The notice was issued on Friday.

She and the college administration were summoned by the vice-chancellor of Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University on Monday, according to Indian Express.

“Every girl student of the college is hereby notified that: (1) Every girl student of the college shall bring a passport-size photo of hers for her registration as member of page committee of the BJP… (2) It is necessary for every girl student to carry her mobile phone to college for joining the (ongoing) member (enrolment) drive of the BJP,” read the notice.

“I came to know about the notice on Sunday evening. I went to the college this morning to discuss the issue with the incharge principal when she tendered her resignation. She told me that it was her moral duty to step down as principal after what had happened,” Indian Express quotes Dhirendra Vaishnav, executive director of Smt Rukshamanibahen Dipchand Gardi Bhavnagar Stree Kelavani Mandal, the Bhavnagar-registered charitable trust which runs the college as saying.
