Maharashtra’s Marathwada reports 1,088 farmer suicides in 2023, 65 more than previous year

According to a report from the Marathwada divisional commissioner’s office, 1,088 farmers died by suicide in eight districts within the Maharashtra area in 2023, PTI reported. It is 65 suicide deaths more than the reported number of incidents in 2022.

1,023 farmer suicides were reported in 2022 in Marathwada, which comprised Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Hingoli, Dharashiv, Latur, Nanded and Parbhani districts.

The news agency was informed by an official that the relatives of the deceased have been promised compensation of Rs 1 lakh each. PTI stated that “of the 1,088 cases, 777 qualified for ex-gratia, which has been paid out, and 151 cases are presently being investigated.”

According to a report on The Wire, an average of 30 farmers nationwide have died by suicide every day since the Narendra Modi administration came to power in 2014.

Following Beed with 269 suicide deaths out of 1,088 in 2023, the report included Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with 182, Nanded with 175 suicide deaths, Dharashiv with 171 suicide deaths, and Parbhani with 103 suicide deaths.

Some 74, 72, and 42 of these deaths were reported by Jalna, Latur, and Hingoli, respectively.
