NIA creating unnecessary tension in Tamil Nadu: MLA MH Jawahirullah

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader M H Jawahirullah on Thursday criticised the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for building up “unnecessary tension” in various locations in Tamil Nadu, under the “guise of searches”.

Papanasam MLA alleged in the assembly that the central agency is trying to create chaos in the state ahead of Lok Sabha polls, with widespread raids and arrests.

Mr. Jawahirullah cited several instances and said that the NIA should stop such “unnecessary searches”.

Further, he claimed that the hollowness of NIA campaigns and narratives is exposed as the conviction rate in such cases was about 1%.

He also invited the attention of assembly members towards the issues faced by Muslims and other minorities in the state.

“There are restrictions in building mosques even on patta lands,” he pointed out as he urged the State government to remove such obstacles.

At the same time, Mr Jawahirullah welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s stance that it would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act in the State.

In addition, he blamed the AIADMK for its supportive attitude towards Sangh Parivar, which led to the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in parliament.

“BJP did not have the majority in Rajya Sabha to pass the CAA Bill in December 2019. Only because the 11 AIADMK MPs supported the bill in Rajya Sabha, the bill was passed,” he claimed in the speech.

He said when DMK introduced a resolution opposing the CAA and the National Register of Citizens in the state assembly in 2021, AIADMK members walked out of the assembly citing trivial reasons.

The crucial statement came out at a time when a group of 17 former AIADMK MLAs and one former MP joined the BJP last week.
