Muhammad Zahiruddin, a 55-year-old Muslim truck driver was lynched to death in Bihar’s Saran district on Wednesday night by Hindu mob who claimed his freight of cattle bones, a raw material for making capsules for medicines, was beef.

The truck was coming from Tajpur in Saran district and was carrying bones to a factory at Marhaura that makes medicinal ingredients. Cattle bones are used to make gelatine for the pharmaceutical industry. Gelatine is used to make capsules and in cosmetics, health supplements and some medicinal products.

The Muslim man could not run away because he had fractured one of his legs a few years ago and undergone surgery for the insertion of a stainless steel rod.

The deceased was a resident of Majhwalia village under Gaura outpost.

Factory owner Muhammad Haider told media persons that the lynching took place in front of some cops from Jalalpur police station who had reached there.

“While the helper and other labourers managed to flee from the spot, Zahiruddin failed as he was having an iron rod installed in his leg and was unable to run. The mob brutally beat him until he died on the spot. The local police of Jalalpur also reached the spot but they did not intervene in the matter. The violent mob blamed the truck driver for being a Muslim and doing the business of bones and flesh ahead of Eid-al-Adha,” Haider said.

“The helper and other employees were frightened after the way Zahiruddin was lynched. They have informed me about the incident,” he added.

A case was registered against 6 named and 20-25 other unknown persons in Jalalpur Police Station Case.
