Amidst Riyadh Summit, Hamas urges Arab and Muslim leaders: ‘Focus on these three areas…’

Speaking to media about the joint Arab League and OIC summit in Riyadh, Hamas which governs Gaza Strip emphasised three key areas for Arab and Muslim leaders to focus on.

Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan was speaking to Al Jazeera from Beirut.

“First, to stop the Israeli attacks and genocide against the Palestinians,” Hamdan said, calling on countries to cut relations with Israel.

“The second point is to send humanitarian and medical aid and fuel,” he said.

“And the third one, which is very important, is to talk with one voice that the Palestinian cause must be solved from the basis of the Palestinian rights, and not from any other basis,” Hamdan added.

He went on to say: “The peace process in the last three decades was built on the needs of Israel – and this is the cause of the failure.”

Arab and Muslim leaders who spoke at the joint summit of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in the Saudi capital, have all condemned Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.

“What is taking place in Gaza is a real threat at all levels. These are unprecedented events. How come the bombardment of hospitals becomes an ordinary attack under the false allegations that there are tunnels and military installations underneath?” said Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at the Riyadh summit.

Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan said an international peace conference should be convened for a permanent solution between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said the “policies of collective punishment” in Gaza were unacceptable and “cannot be justified by self-defence or any other claims.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called on the US to pressure Israel into stopping its attacks on Gaza. He said the Palestinians were facing an “unmatched genocidal war.”
