Medical supplies, including oxygen, were running low at Gaza’s overwhelmed Al-Shifa hospital as the death toll from five days of ferocious fighting between Hamas and Israel rose sharply on October 11 with Israel keeping up its bombardment of Gaza after recovering the dead from the last communities near the border where Palestinian militants had been holed up. Newborn Palestinian babies in incubators are beginning to die as Israeli forces put Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital under total siege and power blackout, several Gaza-based journalists and Middle East Eye reported on Saturday.

On Friday night, the Ministry of Health said that up to 30,000 people are inside the hospital’s complex, including patients, displaced people and medical staff.

Israeli forces attacked the front gate of al-Shifa, where thousands of patients and displaced Palestinians have been sheltering.

Anyone trying to leave or move between the hospitals inside the complex gets shot and murdered by Israeli snipers deployed in high-rise buildings surrounding the complex.

The hospital is left without power, internet, water, and medical supplies.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Gaza told Al Jazeera that Israel is bombing the surgery building inside the Shifa Medical Complex right now.

The Palestinian health ministry has said 198 medical personnel have been killed, 53 ambulances destroyed, and 21 hospitals have been put out of service since war broke out on 7 October.
