The Muslim Council of Britain, UK’s largest Muslim umbrella organisation today raised serious concerns about the ongoing hate crimes against Muslims and ‘state-sanctioned Islamophobia’ in India.
Three decades after Babri Masjid’s demolition, hate crimes against Muslims go on with impunity and state-sanctioned Islamophobia remains pervasive, said the group in an official note.
29 years ago, on 6 December 1992, the screaming mob of thousands of Hindu militants stormed Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya demolished it with sledgehammers and their bare hands.
In 2019, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the site in Ayodhya, where Hindutva mobs destroyed Babri Masjid, must be handed over to a trust to oversee the construction of a Hindu temple. Many argue that India’s top court’s verdict puts a legal seal on the goal of the political agenda of Hindutva that led to Babri Masjid’s demolition.
Last year, another Indian court acquitted all Hindutva leaders including former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, for “lack of credible evidence”.
“On this day, we join British Indian Muslims, and all concerned Indians, in support of the multifaith fabric of Indian society,” read the statement.
The Muslim group also urged Indian authorities to live up to its credentials as the world’s largest democracy by ensuring the protection of all its citizens.
