Jyotiraditya Scindia quits Congress, Sonia Gandhi expels Scindia for ‘Anti-party activities’

Former Union Minister and four-time Congress parliamentarian Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the Congress today plunging the Kamal Nath led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh into crisis.

Scindia send his resignation to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi shortly after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s residence.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia with immediate effect for anti-party activities, congress leaders said.

NDTV has reported that Scindia may join the BJP, either today or on Saturday, and be nominated to the Rajya Sabha as its member.

Scindia’s move, which comes a day after 17 Congress MLAs loyal to him were flown by chartered plane to BJP-ruled Karnataka, has left the Madhya Pradesh government on the brink a dramatic collapse.

According to ANI, Madhya Pradesh Raj Bhavan authorities has said 19 Congress MLAs have already submitted letters of resignation.

As of today morning the Kamal Nath government had 120 MLAs – just four over the majority mark of 116 in the 230-member assembly.

Former Foreign Minister Natwar Singh told ANI: I am not surprised that Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from Congress & will join BJP. I feel he will be sent to Rajya Sabha & inducted into Union Cabinet. His father Madhavrao Scindia would have been Prime Minister if he had lived.
