Rajasthan: BJP leader, three others arrested for setting mosque on fire

Four people including a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader have been arrested after a mosque in Bahadurpur of Rajasthan’s Alwar was set on fire on June 20.

Police have registered a first information report (FIR) against 50 local men, charging them with unlawful assembly, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, deliberately outraging religious feelings, causing damage to property, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.

Fourteen of the accused are named in the FIR: Raman Gulati, Bhavik Joshi, Raghuveer Saini, Manohar Lal Saini, Girdhari Lal Joshi, Avtar Sardar, Ratan Saini, Babulal Saini, Khusi Gurjar, Braham Muni, Subhash, Kailash, Parmod, and Manohar.

According to The Wire, one of the accused Raman Gulati was a former sub-district head of BJP’s Alwar division.

On June 20, at 3 pm, a Hindu mob gathered and set fire to the mosque, leading to the destruction of prayer mats and curtains. The mob also shattered the glass windows of the building.

The assailants were also chanting Jai Shri Ram slogans and anti-Muslim slogans.
